Rina Mushonga

The most exciting artist we caught at The Great Escape. She and her band create a sound that’s somewhere between Afrobeat, the xx and Candi Staton’s ‘You Got The Love’, a rhythmic groove-based and elegantly restrained sound that’s a launching pad for Mushonga’s soaring vocal.

NME

The pop innovator, Rina Mushona, has a truly unique sound characterized by powerful vocals, carefully layered synths, fiery beats and Afropop inflections.

Her beautifully eclectic collection of music might well be traced back to Rina’s own heritage and history of moving around: at various points of her life she has lived in India, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands before moving to London.

Her latest album ‘In a Galaxy’ is typically diverse in style, with influences from the street noise of Peckham, flute samples, panpipes and even dubstep, but with a common theme of empowerment throughout. In her own words she describes the record as “Paul Simon in a sweaty, African dancehall club.”
