Our friends Bristol Punchline are once again curating the best in the new wave of alternative comedy from across the UK featuring comedian and compere Mark Olver alongside some very special guests including Fern Brady, Spencer Jones and Gavin Osborn. They’ll also be hosting the riotous live action Comedians Cinema Club plus some 2D inspired chortling with the Bristol Bad Film Club too!
Our host for the stand-up comedy: warm, lovely and riotously funny. Mark is the only man we know that could turn a stranded Antartic expedition into a comedy crowd. He didn’t, but he totally could. The absolute best in the business – just ask anyone.
Anarchic, absurd and frequently quite alcoholic, Comedians Cinema Club brings together the UK’s best comedians and forces them to improvise their way through a movie in under one hour.
A Time Out Critics Choice every month since February 2015, we’re thrilled to hand over to the Comedians Cinema Club for a late night special. Past titles have included all of the Harry Potters, ET, Star Wars, Top Gun and Ghostbusters. Farmfest’s film is set to be announced at a later date.
"A fun, chaotic show in which comics enact a classic film with the help of the audience. In Indiana Jones, punters became elephants to ride the cast through India; in Jaws they were cast as the ocean, beach dwellers, underwater corpses and John Williams."
Since starting comedy in 2010 Fern Brady has appeared on Stewart Lee’s Alternative Comedy Experience, 8 out of 10 Cats and Seann Walsh’s Late Night Comedy Spectacular.
“Top five young comedians to watch” – The Telegraph
“Appealingly acidic… with moments of sparkling verve” – The Guardian
“Brilliantly on point savvy seething” – List
Joyful joyful nonsense from Spencer Jones as The Herbert – star of Live From The BBC, RTE’s The Al Porter Show, BBC2’s Upstart Crow and Still Open All Hours. This is peak silliness from an act with one foot in the clown camp, one in a box with ‘Props’ scrawled on it and another one protruding from his head. You’ve not seen anything like this.
“One of the silliest, most consuming shows of the Fringe” ★★★★★ Times
“Utterly delightful” ★★★★ Time Out
Perhaps best known for his frequent collaborations with Daniel Kitson, Gavin is a spellbinding live performer in his own right. You could certainly hear a pin drop as he played to a packed tent at last year's Farmfest so come and have a laugh, and maybe a little sniffle, as we welcome him back. The musical equivalent of a big warm hug.
“Completely wonderful” – The Quietus
Athena Kugblenu is 2015 BBC New Comedy Award Finalist. She's been heard on BBC4 extra, BBC Radio 2 and written for BBC Radio 4's News Quiz. Athena is a comic, event host and writer with intelligent, thought-provoking jokes that still have an edgy sting.
Charming and amusing in equal measure, Phil’s surreal stories and laid back style build on smartly written observations. Runner up in the Bath Comedy Festival New Act Competition 2015.
Whimsy observations and a love of pop culture abound with our very own Alice, fresh from a turn at the 6 Music Festival comedy stage, and co-host of the Trinity Centre’s Garden Party.
The bear with no hair, AKA Bristol’s scariest baby.
“Charming, eccentric and intelligent” – Chuckle Busters
“Nice to meet you too” – Russell Howard
Despite only being in comedy for a year, Jo is already proving herself to be one of Bristol’s brightest upcoming talents. Dry, deadpan observations provide big laughs.
A place where movie fans can come and behold the most notorious films ever put to celluloid. Bristol Bad Film Club was set up to screen films that are so-bad- they’re-great, cult classics that are rarely shown, movies with notorious reputations and classics from our childhood that no-one else seems to have heard of.
Head on over to our Film & Theatre listings for details on the awfully amazing film they’ll be screening.
Laughing Stock are an award-winning, five star, sketch comedy foursome, ‘ying-yanged to perfection’ (The Mumble) and on their way to perform at The Edinburgh Festival for the second time. Expect ‘fast and furious fun’ (Sunday Express) as you delve into their wonderfully observed, impeccably paced and hilariously delivered take on the world.
“Wonderfully observed, impeccably paced and hilariously delivered, Laughing Stock is a riot from start to finish. Together they are positively electric.”
